Innovation, China’s Next Advantage
Dean Hellmut Schütte is pleased to invite you to our alumni and friends event on Monday October 20, 2014 at Dartmouth House in London (The English Speaking Union), from 18:00 to 21:00. In addition to having an opportunity to network with friends of CEIBS and China, Dean Schütte will provide a brief School update, which will be followed by an interactive session entitled Innovation, China’s Next Advantage, led by Professor George Yip. This practical session is based on a three-year research programme conducted by the CEIBS Centre on China Innovation, and will highlight:
- why China has both supply and demand innovation advantages
- how foreign companies are not simply transferring technology from advanced countries to China, but are also creating new technologies in China—for China and the rest of the world
- challenges foreign companies face in developing innovation in China, along with some of surprising solutions
- Chinese company approaches to innovation
- insights into the most innovative Chinese companies

Hellmut Schütte
Dr. Hellmut Schütte is Distinguished Professor of International Management, Vice President and Dean at China Europe International Business School. He is also Emeritus Professor of International Management at INSEAD, whose faculty he joined in 1981 and where he also served as Dean of its fast growing Asia campus in Singapore. He has also been a visiting professor at the University of Tokyo and Boston University as well as a visiting scholar at Harvard University. Dean Schütte’s teaching and research expertise is in international business, with a special focus on Asia and Emerging Markets. Prior to earning his doctorate from the University of St. Gallen, he worked in marketing and investment banking roles across Asia.
George Yip
Based in both Shanghai and London since 2011, George Yip is a Professor of Strategy and Co-Director, Centre on China Innovation at CEIBS as well as a Visiting Professor of Management at Imperial College Business School. He has previously served as VP and Director of Research & Innovation at Capgemini Consulting, Dean of the Rotterdam School of Management (Erasmus University) and as a faculty member at the Harvard, UCLA, Cambridge and London business schools. Professor Yip is widely published, having authored such notable books as Strategic Transformation, Managing Global Customers, Asian Advantage and Total Global Strategy. He has earned both a BA and MA in economics from Cambridge University, an MBA from Cranfield School of Management, and an MBA and DBA from Harvard Business School.
