As an opening of CEIBS Art Series, the Mid-Summer Concert in June has brought many glowing reviews from the audiences and raised the expectations for follow-up events of the Art Series. Hereupon, the second session, “Art Appreciation of Ballet”, will kick off in September.

Considered as an “Enchanting Toes of Ballet”, the art of ballet originated during the Italian Renaissance and has evolved into a globally popular and influential art in its history of over four centuries. Together with Shanghai Jing’an Chapter of CEIBS Alumni Association, CEIBS will host the Art Appreciation of Ballet to bring the CEIBSers closer to this classic art.

The Appreciation of Ballet will review the history of ballet and provide some guidance on how to appreciate this kind of art form. The on-site demonstration by excellent ballerinas will offer the audience deeper insights into ballet. 

The guest speaker, Mr. Wu Jie, is Vice-President of Shanghai Opera House and former Vice-President of Shanghai Ballet Troupe. He is the council member of Shanghai Dancers’ Association and a national first-class actor who played the leading role in many ballet works, including the Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Coppélia, Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, The White-Haired Girl, and Butterfly Lovers. He also served as a choreographer for some ballets. He has been widely acclaimed for his commitment to ballet education and popularization.

As guest performers, excellent young dancers from Shanghai Ballet Troupe will give a demonstration of basic ballet movements to match up the presentation by Mr. Wu. 

These ballerinas will also perform the scenes of classical ballets, such as the Dance of the Cygnets and The Dying Swan. The Dance of the Cygnets is a dance from Act II of the four-act ballet Swan Lake and its music, featuring a lively and cheerful melody, is considered as one of the most popular music in this ballet work. The Dying Swan is accompanied to XIII Movement of the musical suite The Carnival of the Animals by the French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, with touching melody tugging at the audience’s heartstrings. This feast for the senses will offer the CEIBSers an opportunity to appreciate both music and ballet.

*All of them have delivered a stellar performance in the all-star ballet Swan Lake. They have gained high praise during their US and European tours with Shanghai Ballet Troupe.

Special thanks to Shanghai Jing’an Chapter of CEIBS Alumni Association who has brought fantastic art appreciation activities to CEIBSers for three years. The activities of Opera Appreciation in the past two years has been widely recognized. This year we collaborate with Jina’an chapter again and introduce more art resources to Shanghai campus, inviting the CEIBSers to another art appreciation field – Appreciation of Ballet.
