During this lecture, Prof. Sampler will introduce key principles of strategy that will help companies prepare themselves better for turbulent times. Prof. Sampler challenges conventional strategic thinking and reveals why the typical tools of strategy are so badly out of sync with our needs, where ‘business as usual’ is no longer a relevant approach. He argues that strategic change is just as important as strategic formulation and that strategic change is not a sign of weakness. He uses case studies to illustrate principles of successful strategic planning to prepare you for a post-COVID-19 environment. Finally, you will learn how to be prepared and proactive, rather than reactive, even when the future is uncertain.

About the Speaker

Jeffrey L. Sampler is a Professor of Management Practice at China Europe International Business School (CEIBS). He previously served as a faculty member at London Business School and the University of Oxford for over 20 years. In addition, he has collaborated with MIT’s Center for Information Systems Research (CISR) for over two decades.

Prof. Sampler’s research straddles the intersection between strategy and technology. He is currently researching digital technologies as a driving force in the transformation of many industries. His other area of focus is exploring the nature of strategic planning in very turbulent and rapidly growing markets – his book, Bringing Strategy Back, gives companies insights for planning in such environments. His research interests also include the strategic implications of new technology, and the management of information as a strategic resource. His paper with John Cross and Michael Earl on the “Transformation of IT at British Petroleum Exploration” won first prize in the Society of Information Manager’s paper competition. He has written two books on the economic transformation of Dubai, Sand to Silicon and Sand to Silicon – Going Global.
