CEIBS MBA Experience Day | Redefining Value: Examining Reported Earnings in New Age Business Models
Join us for an insightful lecture with CEIBS Assistant Professor of Accounting Venkat Peddireddy.
Investors rely on financial reports to evaluate a company's current performance and assess its potential for generating future value. Among the various performance measures, earnings, which is the bottom-line number, captures investor attention the most. However, this number is obtained by subtracting various expenses from revenues, which are reported using a diverse and often inconsistent set of accounting conventions.
In this session, Professor Peddireddy will discuss how these accounting conventions can render earnings less informative about future profits, particularly for modern businesses with significant intangible investments. Over the past two decades, an increasing number of firms have reported negative earnings, largely due to the disconnect between traditional accounting rules and the evolving landscape of business models. This leads us to an intriguing question: Can investors afford to disregard loss-making firms? Join us to discover the answer to this thought-provoking question.
