“China and the World” Forum
Forum Background
China's economic rise over the past half-century is the defining global story of our time. From the initiation of reform in 1978 to WTO accession in 2001 and now the success of a new wave of Chinese enterprises competing globally in cutting-edge industries, the country has achieved numerous milestones. We simply cannot talk about the recent history of global development without talking about China; equally, China and its relationship with the world are of the utmost importance as we look toward a shared global future.
In many ways, China’s story over the last few decades has been one of collaboration, cooperation, and dialogue, defined by mutually beneficial engagement with the international community. CEIBS, founded in 1994 by the Chinese government and the European Union, embodies this spirit of global cooperation. For three decades, CEIBS has promoted cross-border exchange, provided talent and knowledge to Chinese and international enterprises, and nurtured globally minded business leaders.
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of CEIBS’ founding, we have invited distinguished guests from the worlds of academia, business, and politics – all with a unique connection to CEIBS - to examine China’s relationship with the world. Through historical reflections, contemporary analysis, and forward-looking discussions, we aim to unravel the complexities of global politics and economics and explore new paths for China and Europe amidst increasing uncertainty. Our speakers will also delve into AI, ESG, and other disruptive fields, highlighting their potential for global cooperation. Through their insights, we aim to offer a clearer understanding of the past, decipher the present, and chart a course toward a brighter future.

【Chapter I】 The world currently finds itself amidst several once-in-a-generation shifts, with the global economy and business landscape both undergoing profound transformations marked by geopolitical discord and the complex interplay of economic forces, accompanied by the rapid development of disruptive technologies. Both China and Europe have vital roles to play in sustaining global development, and a duty to work together constructively. What are the most important transformations that are unfolding in the global political and economic arena? What will shape the future of trade and the world economy? How can China and Europe transcend their differences and work toward collaboration? These pivotal questions will serve as the focal point of discussion in our forum’s first session, in which numerous esteemed guests will face these pressing issues head on. |

【Chapter II】 Since joining the World Trade Organization in 2001, China has been a vital engine of global growth; now, to achieve development amid economic fragmentation, China and the global community must focus on common interests and build a new system of multilateral cooperation. Strengthening exchanges in areas such as ESG (environmental, social, and governance), artificial intelligence, and technological innovation, for example, could inject new vitality into the global economy. In this discussion, we will explore China's past, present, and future development through the experiences of those who have witnessed it firsthand. What has China achieved since its WTO accession? What lessons have been learned, and what opportunities and challenges await in the future? How should China cooperate with the international community when it comes to disruptive technology and regulation? Our distinguished guests will discuss these crucial topics and more. |
