CEIBS OUTLOOK SERIES: Professor Pascal Lamy
Nine years ago, as part of CEIBS’ 20th anniversary celebrations, a number of top scholars along with political and business leaders from across China and the world were invited to the school’s five campuses in China, Europe and Africa. Among them were Lars Peter Hansen, Kazuo Inamori, Peter Thiel, Li Dongsheng, Liu Yonghao, Richard Liu, Jerry Yang, Guo Guangchang, Samuel Chao Chung Ting, and Yang Fujia. All provided valuable insights and unique perspectives on entrepreneurship, the nature of business, modern industry practices, and more.
Since then, the world has faced enormous uncertainty, from economic challenges and geopolitical shifts to the most devastating pandemic in a century. However, with crisis comes opportunity. An explosion of new ideas, models and technologies has opened up unprecedented possibilities for development. Those with knowledge and experience can help us navigate the choppy waters of rapid change; they also remind us that no matter which way the winds of change blow, wisdom and learning remain the beacons that can guide us toward a better future.
In celebration of CEIBS’ upcoming 30th anniversary in 2024, amidst an ever-evolving global landscape, the CEIBS Outlook Series now welcomes former Director General of the World Trade Organization and CEIBS Distinguished Professor Pascal Lamy for a talk on the theme "What's Next for Globalisation?". This topic not only reflects one of the key questions of our time, but also functions as a strategic response to the unprecedented changes that have reshaped the dynamics of international relations and business in recent years.
Globalisation, once a seemingly unstoppable force propelling nations and economies towards interconnectedness, has encountered significant headwinds and challenges. The global pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and shifts in economic power have not only exposed vulnerabilities in this global model, but also raised pertinent questions about the future viability of globalisation itself.
With his extensive experience as the Director General of the World Trade Organization and his current high-profile roles in several global institutions, Professor Lamy possesses a unique vantage point from which to analyse and forecast the future of globalisation. His insights will shed light on the evolving nature of international trade, cooperation, and the role of institutions in shaping the next phase of globalisation. His keynote speech will be followed by an interactive conversation with CEIBS Professor Xu Bin who, with extensive expertise in economics and finance, will lead a well-rounded exploration of the topic and encourage a nuanced examination of economic trends, policy implications, and the delicate balance between global cooperation and national interests. Join us on December 15 to navigate the complexities of our interconnected world and explore how today’s challenges will shape the future.
