Farh, Jiing-Lih Larry

Dr. Jiing-Lih (Larry) Farh is an Honorary Professor and the ABN AMRO Chair in Management at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS); Professor Emeritus of Management, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Prior to joining CEIBS in 2016, he held the position of chair professor, served as head of the department of management, and directed the Hang Lung Center for Organisational Research at the School of Business and Management, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (1993-2016). He was also a tenured associate professor of management at the Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge (1984-1993).
Dr. Farh received his Ph.D. in Organisational Behaviour and Personnel from the Indiana University at Bloomington. His research focuses on management theories as adapted to and practiced in Chinese contexts. He is best known for his seminal works on Chinese leadership (the paternalistic leadership model), organisational citizenship behaviour in Chinese contexts, guanxi and trust, and how personal values of traditionality and power distance affect employee work behavior. He has published over 50 articles in premier journals of management such as the Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Organisation Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, and Organisational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes. His scholarly work has accrued over 20,000 Google Scholar citations and over 6,000 Web of Science citations.
Dr. Farh is a pioneer in management research methods education in China. In 1999, he co-founded the Research Methods Development Workshop with Anne Tsui at HKUST to train mainland management scholars on modern social sciences research methods. This methods workshop has been highly successful. It was continued for two decades and trained over 1,000 management scholars. In 2002, he helped found the International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR), the largest scholarly association devoted to the promotion of management research in China. He served as the President of IACMR (2014-2016) and the Program Chair of its 5th Biennial Conference in Hong Kong in 2012. His co-edited book with Xiao-Ping Chen and Anne Tsui on research methodology for Chinese management research was published by the Peking University Press in 2008 and again in 2012. It was the best-selling method text in graduate management studies in China.
Dr. Farh has won several citation awards for his research including: the Highly Cited Researchers in Business and Economics worldwide compiled by Clarivate Analytics in 2017 and 2018, the Journal of Management 2019 Scholarly Impact Award, and the Emerald Citations of Excellence Award in 2013 and 2015. He was the recipient of the 2018 CEIBS Research Excellence Award and the CEIBS Medal for Research Excellence in 2019.
Dr. Farh has frequently been a keynote speaker for academic conferences including the Asian Academy of Management Biennial Conference in 2015, IACMR Biennial Conference in 2016, and Indigenous Research Conference on Leadership and Organisational Change in 2019.
