CEIBS Ranked 26th in The Case Centre Impact Index 2023

On December 11th, 2023, The Case Centre launched its inaugural Impact Index, ranking the top 50 organizations based on the global reach and impact of their case writing. Notably, CEIBS secured 26th place on the list, standing out as the only featured business school from the Chinese mainland.
As the independent home of the case method and distributor of the world’s largest and most diverse collection of cases, including those from leading business schools worldwide, The Case Centre is uniquely placed to reward case teaching and writing excellence. For many years, The Case Centre has celebrated excellent cases, authors, and teachers through its recognition portfolio of the annual bestselling and classic cases, awards and competitions, and bestselling case authors initiatives.
The Impact Index is compiled using The Case Centre’s usage data from the previous academic year (1 September – 31 August). To reflect the global reach and impact of an organization’s case writing, the index metrics include how many of their cases have been adopted, by how many organizations, in how many countries, and how many individual students have been taught with the cases. All organizations that have published at least one case with The Case Centre during the previous academic year are eligible. In 2023 the Top 50 were taken from 439 eligible schools.
CEIBS President Wang Hong noted that The Case Centre has long been at the forefront of advancing case development and case studies in the global management education community. This year, it launched “The Case Centre Impact Index”, which ranks organizations based on the global reach and impact of their case writing. This innovative initiative will have far-reaching implications for global management education. CEIBS secured 26th place in the inaugural 2023 Case Centre Impact Index ranking, a remarkable result that represents recognition of and the motivation behind our commitment to case development. Case studies are designed to distill the essence of management and business principles from ever-changing business practices, enabling students to flexibly navigate the complexities of the real business world. We have emphasized case development and case studies since CEIBS' inception. Adhering to international standards for case development, we focus on delving into the unique challenges and decision-making contexts of Chinese business management. Every year, we develop more than 100 cases for classroom teaching, a significant contribution to providing high-quality case studies. As part of our efforts to shape and share Chinese management knowledge around the world in the era of globalization, we also submit the latest China-focused cases covering distinctive business practices and management experiences to The Case Centre, Harvard Business Publishing-Education, and Ivey Publishing on an annual basis.
Prof. Frank Bournois, Vice President and Dean at CEIBS, highlighted the critical role of the case method in business school education. In response to China’s rapid economic growth and deepened globalization, there is a growing demand among business schools in China and across the world for cases developed in line with current trends and local contexts, especially those that shed light on the business environment, practices, and corporate culture in China. CEIBS has played an active role in developing such cases, driven not only by its teaching needs but also by its goal of facilitating exchanges between China and the global community. This commitment exemplifies CEIBS’s guiding principle of “China Depth and Global Breadth” in its educational endeavors.
Prof. Chen Shimin, Professor of Accounting, Zhu Xiaoming Chair Professor in Accounting, and Director of the Case Center at CEIBS, was deeply gratified by this achievement. He attributed the success to the school’s strong emphasis on and continuous investment in case development, as well as the collaborative efforts of CEIBS faculty, case researchers, case companies, students, alumni, and various partners. China-focused cases developed by CEIBS are not only used extensively in Chinese business schools but also boast a strong presence in international management education through platforms like The Case Centre. Committed to its mission of “focusing on management issues in the Chinese context, adhering to international standards, and supporting classroom teaching”, the CEIBS Case Center will continue to explore cutting-edge management issues and blend theoretical concepts with applications, contributing to higher levels of case development, teaching, and research in management education, not only in China but also internationally.
As one of the world’s largest teaching case platforms for business schools, The Case Centre has long been committed to promoting the development of case writing and teaching, and has made significant contributions to the development, promotion, use, and innovation of teaching cases around the world. Since 1996, CEIBS has partnered with The Case Centre as a member organization. CEIBS has since consistently embarked on dedicated international engagement in the field of teaching cases, eventually producing the first set of teaching cases in the Chinese mainland to meet international standards. As of November 2023, over 500 CEIBS cases have been published by The Case Centre
Established in 2001, the CEIBS Case Center has been working with faculty to develop cases for high-quality teaching. It is also committed to promoting the case method in management education by operating the Global Platform of China Cases (ChinaCases.Org), with the support of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. To date, the ChinaCases.Org has collected some 2,800 cases and served the teaching of over 7,000 faculty members from 90 schools and institutions nationwide. Cumulatively, the case usage has reached a million copies in classroom teaching.
