5th Annual CEIBS Strategy & Entrepreneurship Symposium
December 12, 2023. Shanghai – The latest cutting-edge research on business practices related to strategy and entrepreneurship was the focus of discussions today at the 5th Annual CEIBS Strategy and Entrepreneurship Symposium held at CEIBS’ Shanghai campus, with experts delving into globalisation, innovation management, strategic complexity, and textual insights in a rapidly evolving business landscape.
CEIBS Vice President and Dean Frank Bournois and Chair of CEIBS Strategy & Entrepreneurship Department Daniel Han Ming Chng gave welcome addresses. They both noted the important role that department symposiums play in enhancing the position of CEIBS as a leading international business school in research and business.
Professor Henrich Greve from INSEAD then gave a keynote speech entitled Multiple Goals and Performance Feedback in Future Learning Theory. In his speech, Professor Greve reviewed the fundamental concepts of the behavioural theory of the firm by providing a comprehensive summary of the current state of research in the field. He underscored the significance of continuous investigation and provided valuable insights to encourage further exploration into the theory.
Internationalisation of SMEs was the theme of the first session that followed. Professor Said Elbanna of Qatar University discussed the internationalisation of SMEs in Qatar. Professor Linda Hsieh of Birmingham University also presented her insights into SME internationalisation from a Six-Nations study. The session’s last speaker, CEIBS Professor of International Business and Strategy Shameen Prashantham, give a speech on the topic of MNE-SME Partnering: Insights from Emerging Markets.
In the second session of the day, which focused on Governing People and Innovations, Professor David Gomulya of Singapore Management University shared research findings on the impact of CEO’s farming tradition origins of firm’s input to in-person interaction. Jongsoo Kim of Hong Kong Baptist University discussed his work on how technological acquisitions affect the new product quality of acquired firms, providing evidence from the US medical industry. Finally, CEIBS Professor of Strategy Sae Young Lee presented her findings from an in-depth study of signaling imperative and product recalls in new ventures.
Navigating Complexity: Strategic Approaches in Politics, Communication, and Technology was the theme of the third session. Professor Danqing Wang from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology presented her work on Female Politicians and Gendered Corporate Political Donations in Taiwan. Professor Tong Li of Peking University presented a study of the double-edged sword of communication substantiveness in the pursuit of unique strategy. Professor Zhuo Chen of CEIBS also discussed her work on Entry into New Technological Domains via Corporate Venture Capital Investments.
The theme of the fourth and final session was Textual Insights in Finance and Corporate Strategy. In her presentation, Professor Cyndi Man Zhang from Singapore Management University discussed her work on Strategy, Performance Feedback, and Firm Risk Taking. Professor Allen Huang of HKUST presented his research from another perspective: Understanding Individual Investors' Information Demand: Evidence from Earnings Conference Calls. Finally, Professor Wei Guo investigated the role of corporate communication in fostering collaboration among competitors.
More than 130 professors, doctoral students, and business executives primarily from Shanghai and Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, and Shaanxi provinces gathered on the CEIBS Shanghai campus for the event, engaging in a lively Q&A session with each of the authors. CEIBS Strategy & Entrepreneurship department greatly appreciates the contributions of the presenting authors and the attendance and participation of the audience.
