First Station of Case Symposium Campus Tour Kicks off to Boost Case Teaching in China
October 18, 2019. Shanghai – Organised by East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) School of Business, together with ChinaCases.Org and CEIBS Case Center, the first station of the Case Symposium Campus Tour kicked off at ECUST School of Business today.
Before the event, on behalf of ECUST School of Business, Associate Dean Prof. Hou Limin extended a warm welcome to Prof. Chen Shimin, Director of CEIBS Case Center, and his delegation.
More than 50 faculty members from ECUST School of Business and other colleges in China and abroad attended the three-hour Case Symposium. Prof. Chen Shimin, Director of CEIBS Case Center, got the ball rolling by sharing his experience as Editor-in-Chief of ChinaCases.Org. He analysed the characteristics and criteria of high-quality cases, pointed out common problems with China-themed cases, and then captured the attention of the participants by demonstrating the use of a recent financial case he had authored in teaching.
Professor of Finance and Accounting Wang Junqiu and Associate Professor of Marketing Du Weiyu from ECUST School of Business then shared their experiences using cases from ChinaCases.Org for classroom teaching. Prof. Wang Junqiu analysed the benefits and challenges in adopting cases on different themes for her MBA finance course, and offered advice on the content of teaching cases so as to add depth to disciplines covered by the case library. Prof. Du Weiyu spelt out how the views on behaviour, cognition and situation have shaped teaching philosophy from a psychological perspective, and elaborated on how to develop and use high-quality teaching cases based on the characteristics of action learning at ECUST School of Business.
Dr. Zhao Liman, a senior research fellow at the CEIBS Case Center, also shared her story of developing her international award-winning WinChannel case. The examples helped participants understand the amount of hard work required to develop high-quality cases capable of truly serving teaching purposes.
This event was supported by the CEIBS Case Center and leaders from ECUST School of Business. The Case Symposium Campus Tour is a project recently launched by the CEIBS Case Center following the success of the Case Master Development Camp. The Case Master Development Camp, which has proven popular with faculty members from business schools in both China and abroad, has hosted twelve classes since 2016. The Case Symposium Campus Tour aims to provide schools served by the Shanghai MBA Case Development & Sharing Platform and ChinaCases.Org with case method training so as to boost case teaching in China.
Based on the model of the Case Master Development Camp – which provides case method training at CEIBS’ campus – the Case Symposium Campus Tour will be held at other business schools to promote high-quality case teaching in China’s management education. With a wealth of experience gained from the first station, the CEIBS Case Center plans to hold the Case Symposium Campus Tour in four stations in 2020 to build it into a brand for management education in China.
