1+1 Lecture Singapore: Do “Little Emperors” Get More Than “Little Empresses”?

We cordially invite you to attend our exclusive 1+1 Lecture entitled Do “Little Emperors” Get More Than “Little Empresses”? in Singapore on March 7, 2019.

About the Lecture

In this lecture, we will examine boy-girl gender discrimination in China as manifested in parents’ purchase decisions on behalf of their children. Our work is significant because it is the first large-scale empirical study to clearly verify the phenomenon of boy-girl discrimination, albeit taking advantage of e-commerce data. Specifically, we directly compared clothing expenditures on boys versus girls using a rich, household-specific dataset obtained from an online retailer. Furthermore, we found that patterns of gender inequality vary systematically across different geographic markets and that levels of favouritism are closely tied with factors such as socio-economic conditions, education levels, and birth rates. During the lecture, we will also discuss the managerial and social implications of our study.

What is 1+1?

CEIBS launched the 1+1 Project, a series of lectures hosted by leading faculty across multiple continents, in 2017. The audience for these invitation-only lectures is comprised of alumni and friends of CEIBS. Each participant is encouraged to bring with them a ‘plus one’ who is also a qualified prospect for our MBA or Global EMBA programmes.

The core objectives of the 1+1 lecture series are to further strengthen engagement with our international alumni and to provide attendees with the opportunity to play their part in helping shape the future of the student body at CEIBS.
