CEIBS is delighted to be hosting the CEIBS Executive Forum (EFORUM) together with the Germany-based Evonik Industries AG on Jul. 1st, 2008. We are honored to have Mr. Long Yongtu and Dr. Werner Müller as our keynote speakers. The theme of the forum is “Leaders Building Better System: Vision, Competence and Courage”.
Mr. Long Yongtu is the Secretary-General of Boao Forum for Asia, Dean of School of International Relations and Public Affairs and Institute of International Studies of Fudan University, and visiting or adjunct professor of many renowned Chinese universities like Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University, Nankai University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. He worked in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in New York headquarters in charge of development planning for Asian region. From January 1995 to September 2001, he led and participated in China's WTO accession negotiations as Chief Negotiator and Vice Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC), and finally won the 15-year-long negotiations.
Dr. Müller was born in 1946 in Essen, Germany. He is currently the Chairman of the Executive Board of Evonik Industries AG. He studied economics in Mannheim, philosophy in Duisburg and Bremen, and linguistics in Bremen, and was awarded the doctorate degree from Bremen University. After leaving schools as a lecturer, Dr. Müller joined the Executive Board of VEBA Kraftwerke Ruhr AG (VKR AG), Gelsenkirchen. From 1982 to 2002, he was appointed Federal Minister of Eco and Tech, as a member of Gerhard Schröder's cabinet.
Dr. Müller has been dedicated to the reform of German energy system both as a political and a business leader, whereas Mr. Long Yongtu played a vital role to bring China into the global trading system, which marked a new milestone for China in the endeavor of establishing an open and free economy system. What are the challenges they met in the course of the reform? What are the characters in common that makes them the leaders building a better system?
