BBC Film Day: Debate on BBC climate change film “Five Disasters Waiting to Happen”

co-hosted by the UK’s BBC and China Europe International Business School on 6 March 2008 at China Europe International Business School in Shanghai.

The British Consulate General in Shanghai’s BBC Film Day is aimed towards raising awareness of climate change amongst policy-makers, opinion formers and business and frame it as a global issue requiring global action. To the aim is also to raise the profile of the British Consulate as an ideas-hub for climate change issues in Shanghai among the target audience of decision-makers in industry and policymakers.

“Five Disasters Waiting to Happen” is a BBC documentary examining five locations: London, Shanghai, Mumbai, Paris and Tuvalu. In “Five Disasters Waiting To Happen”, experts discuss the measures taken to monitor such disasters, for example: London is building buildings on stilts to counter the threat of river flooding. Paris is searching for new ways to beat the heat after 15,000 heat-wave deaths in 2003. A tiny South Pacific island may provide a warning to the world with the first climate change environmental refugees. Shanghai and Mumbai’s economic expansion in the face of growing typhoons and monsoon flooding are also studied.
