Rough Diamonds

CEIBS Professor of Strategy Sam (Seung Ho) Park has co-authored the book Rough Diamonds: The Four Traits of Successful Breakout Firms in BRIC Countries, which was selected as the Best Book on Globalization in 2013 by strategy + business magazine. The book looks at the companies that are defining the next generation of flourishing firms in the fast-growing BRIC economies.

These firms rank among the top 25 manufacturing firms in their own countries as well as comparable firms worldwide – often exceeding them in terms of sales growth, profit margins, and return on assets over time. Prof. Park and his co-authors outline who these rough diamond firms are, and explain their exemplary performance through the Four Cs for Sustaining High Performance: Capitalizing on late development; Creating Market Inclusive Niches; Crafting Operational Excellence; and Cultivating Profitable Growth.

Prof. Park and his co-authors show how these firms achieved their extraordinary levels of performance, and reveal what it will take for them to sustain these advantages in the future. Their success and future growth foreshadows the new rules of the game for firms in both developing and developed markets.

The book features a forward by CEIBS International Advisory Board Chairman Dr. John A. Quelch.
Prof. Park’s co-authors are Nan Zhou, Assistant Professor at Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO and Gerardo R. Ungson, the Y. F. Chang Endowed Chair Professor of International Business at the College of Business, San Francisco State University. Rough Diamonds was published by Jossey-Bass in May 2013.

Prof. Park was President of SKOLKOVO-Ernst & Young Institute for Emerging Market Studies and Chair Professor of Strategy at Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO. He was the founding president of Samsung Economic Research Institute China and a member of the Academic Council at CEIBS. He has served as Division Chair of the Academy of Management and a board member of most major management journals and is a Fellow of the Academy of International Business.
