March 1, 2017. Shanghai – CEIBS MBAs are busy preparing to host the East Asia Regional Finals of the globally renowned Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC) 2017 which will be held at the School’s Shanghai Campus March 11.

“This is different from other business school competitions as you play the role of VCs, conducting all of the research into startup companies and then making the final decision on where and how to invest. It is a great test of the MBA toolkit as you need a comprehensive view of a business plan to act strategically, assess risk, evaluate opportunities and negotiate terms,” says Symphier Pang (MBA2018), Captain of CEIBS VCIC team. This competition is unique in that it asks MBA students to play the role of venture capital investors, and they are pitched by real entrepreneurs. The student teams then have only one day to evaluate business plans, negotiate term sheets, make an investment decision and convince a judging panel of experienced VCs of the soundness of their investment rationale. The winner of the East Asia Regional Finals will travel to North Carolina to compete in the VCIC Global Finals at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School which founded the competition in 1998.

This is the third year that CEIBS is hosting the East Asia Regional Finals, and this year’s student organizers have brought together an impressive list of VC industry players to judge the competition, including Cowin Capital Partner Grace Duan, Peeli Venture Managing Partner Harry Qin, Qiming Venture Partners Principal Jay Yin, Jupai Investment (NYSE) Partner Raymond Cao, and MytechChina Venture Partner John Yu.

There was also fierce competition among CEIBS MBA 2018 students to represent the school in the regional finals here. The winning team, headed by Symphier includes Alexis Wu, Shaolei Hong, James Yang and Richard Higgs. Brenda Zhou will also be joining the team to contribute to the team's efforts on the day in the role of observer.

The CEIBS team will be competing on March 11 with teams from Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Graduate School of Management at GLOBIS University, Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance at Shanghai Jiaotong University (SAIF) and Guanghua School of Management at Peking University. The winner of the regional finals will go on to represent East Asia in the 20th annual global finals scheduled take place at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School in Chapel Hill, NC April 7-8, 2017.
