CEIBS Global EMBA’s Tom Williams Makes Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia List

October 19, 2017. Shanghai – Tom Williams isn’t your typical CEIBS Global EMBA participant. At 28, he’s younger than usual. However, his impressive résumé convinced the GEMBA team they should make an exception for the young Australian.

And it’s not just CEIBS that Tom has impressed.  A panel of judges including Solina Chau (one of the world’s most powerful women, according to Forbes) listed him among social entrepreneurs who are making their mark in Asia.

Tom made Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2017 list because of the work he’s been doing with WeTeach, an online platform that makes learning more accessible to Chinese primary school students. The Shanghai-based platform, which was launched last year, connects students with 400 experienced teachers. In addition to providing an opportunity for students and teachers to learn from each other, some of the proceeds from WeTeach are also donated to charities that support rural education in China.

“Most lists terrify me. They usually name everything I haven't yet done, but meant by now, to do. However, it was an honour to be a part of this one. Forbes’ support of cross-cultural, global education is invaluable,” said Tom.

He first came to China in the late 2000s as a visiting scholar first at Renmin then Peking University. Afterward, he worked for the former Australian Ambassador to China, ran a Chinese literature translation house, and then entered funds management in Australia. He returned to China last year to do the 20-month CEIBS Global EMBA and work on WeTeach.

"I found the ‘China depth, Global breadth’ ethos of CEIBS highly compelling. I look forward to forging lasting friendships and business partnerships with the shapers of the Asian Century economy,” said Tom.
