June 27, 2017. Shanghai - CEIBS is delighted to welcome world-renowned scientist Professor Zhixun Shen, who will deliver a Master Class June 30 at the Shanghai Campus titled “Social Trends and Technological Innovation Opportunity”. Dr. Shen is the Paul Pigott Professor in Physical Sciences, and a senior fellow of the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University. His research has advanced our understanding of materials related to basic energy sciences, including the physics of superconductors, oxides, semiconductors, novel magnets, and density wave materials.

A prolific inventor, entrepreneur and investor, he is also passionate about people and technology. He says the fundamental purpose of his research is to challenge the problems that can affect the future of mankind; the industrial applications that have come from his explorations are merely a secondary result. “I currently have two main directions for scientific research. One is the most accurate measurement of the physical world. The other is the study of superconducting materials,” he says. Some of this work he has done through the company he founded, LDV Partners LLC. “Our goal is that if superconductivity at room temperature becomes successful, we will work towards changing the pattern of human civilization.”

Besides LDV Partners, Shen has been involved in founding startups such as Astroenergy, Primenano, and AmpNova. His research has also been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Kamerlingh Onne Prize, an international prize on superconductivity; the E.O. Lawrence Award; the Oliver E. Buckley Prize; and the Einstein Professorship from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has also been elected into the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honours in American science that recognizes outstanding original research achievements. He received his B.S. degree from Fudan University, his M.S. degree from Rutgers University, and Ph.D. degree from Stanford University.

Dr. Shen has also mentored more than 50 graduate students and postdoctoral associates, the majority of whom have gone on to work as faculty at acclaimed research universities around the world. Some have also founded technology startups.

Join the CEIBS Master Class this Friday June 30 to hear Dr. Shen explain how he hopes to advance our lives bridging tech innovation and social trends. Sign up here to attend. (Please Note: if this is your first time attending a Master Class will first need to create an account in the CEIBS User Center before proceeding to the event registration page.)
