TORONTO, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- While the competition attracted teams from around the world, it was Canadian schools who won two of the top three spots in the 4th Annual Rotman International Trading Competition (RITC) held on March 8 to 10 at the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management.
A team of business students from the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business won the competition with members Krasen Chervenkov, Lee Raffey, Derek Spronck, and Hani Tabsh.
Students from Babson College (Massachusetts) with team members Brian Dixon, Nicholas Kyprianou, Eric Mara, and YooBee Yun, placed second.
A team from the Degroote School of Business at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, rounded out the top three with members Keith Foo, Ryan Goulding, Rich Howard, and Neil Johnson.
The RITC pitted teams against each other in a competition that utilizes simulated trading cases that closely mimic different aspects of real world markets. The trading action took place in the Rotman School's state-of-the-art Financial Research and Trading Lab. The competition utilized a trading platform developed at the Rotman Financial Research and Trading Lab. The Rotman Interactive Trader (RIT) is an application that simulates a stock exchange and allows users to transact financial securities with each other on a real-time basis. The user-friendly and transparent interface has been designed specifically to facilitate the learning experience.
"Every year the competitors have brought increasingly sophisticated trading models and this year was no exception. We're always amazed to see the new ideas and strategies that the students develop to meet the challenges of our cases," says Kevin Mak, Manager of the Rotman Financial Research and Trading Lab.
In other results, a team from China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai placed fourth, Penn State placed fifth and the team from the University of Queensland, Australia placed sixth.
The sponsors of the 4th Annual Rotman International Trading Competition were BP North America Gas & Power, CIBC World Markets, Russell Investments Canada Limited, Manulife Financial, TD Securities and the Montreal Exchange.
