CEIBS Welcomes Five New Professors

September 11, 2009. Shanghai campus -- CEIBS is pleased to welcome five new professors to positions beginning during the summer and fall 2009 teaching sessions. Incoming professors are: Dr Hellmut Schutte, Dr Hoerst Loeschel, Dr Elizabeth Weldon, Dr Hong Chen and Dr Frank Yu.

Distinguished Professor of Management and European Chair for Sino-European Business Relations Dr Hellmut Schutte 

Professor Hellmut Schutte officially joined CEIBS on September 1 as Distinguished Professor of Management and European Chair for Sino-European Business Relations, under the EU-China Business Management Project. Prof Schutte will drive the research agenda of the BMT project, focusing on international business strategy and management, and boosting the school's capacity in key programmes. 

As European Chair for Global Governance and Sino-European Business Relations, Prof Schutte will take on the leadership of the BMT activities for CEIBS. Upon Prof Schutte’s appointment to this role, CEIBS Vice President and Dean Rolf D Cremer said: “This is an outstanding development, benefitting the continuity in the BMT Project.” He added that Prof Schutte’s management of the BMT activities will allow CEIBS Professor of Global Responsible Leadership Dr Henri Claude de Bettignies to focus on the Euro-China Centre for Leadership and Responsibility (ECCLAR). Said Dean Cremer: “Given the long-standing cooperation of Profs de Bettignies and Schutte at INSEAD, I expect with this move both a strengthening of the research and teaching under the BMT, and a strengthening on the critical agenda of leadership and responsibility under ECCLAR.” He added that he also expects Prof Schutte to “bring even more prominence and impact” to CEIBS’ Europe China Centre for International Business Relations, lead by Director David Gosset. 

Prof Schutte studied economics and business administration in Germany and obtained his doctorate from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. His previous postings include serving as a visiting scholar at Harvard University, and as visiting professor at University of Tokyo, Boston University, CEIBS, and other China-based business schools. 

His areas of research focus include Asian markets and consumers, especially in China and India, with a focus on the regionalisation of strategies and organisational structures for multinational firms. A seasoned speaker at academic conferences and executive programmes, Prof Schutte holds several board, advisory and consulting positions, and is an Executive Director and Partner of BAF Spectrum, a business angel firm investing in young enterprises. 

Professor of Economics, Director of CEIBS’ German Centre of Banking & Finance Dr Horst Loechel 

On September 1, 2009, Dr. Horst Loechel joined CEIBS for an initial one-year position as Adjunct Professor of Economics and Director of the German Centre of Banking and Finance, which will be established by CEIBS and Frankfurt School of Finance & Management (FS) later this month. The objective of the German Centre of Banking and Finance is to create capacity in both teaching and research in support of the development of Shanghai into an international financial centre, and specifically to cooperate and attract support from the German and European financial sector. 

Prof Loechel is, since 1997, Professor of Economics at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, in Frankfurt, Germany. On an extended leave from the Frankfurt School, he has held the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Vice President of the Shanghai International Banking and Finance Institute (SIBFI) since 2003. Before Frankfurt School, he was Professor of Economics and Acting Head of the Banking and Finance Department at the University of Cooperative Education, Berlin, Germany.
 
Prof Loechel studied economics at the J.-W.-Goethe-University, Frankfurt, Germany, where he was also awarded a PhD. and worked as a scientific assistant until 1994. Prior to this, he started his career as professional banker, and later worked in leading positions in the controlling and finance departments of different commercial enterprises.
 
Areas of focus for teaching and research for Prof Loechel include the fields of applied macroeconomics and financial sector analysis in China. He publishes regularly in scientific journals and newspapers and is a sought-after speaker at conferences. His recent books are The Future of Banking in China (2006) and Praxiswissen Volkswirtschaft in Banking & Finance ( Applying Economics in Banking & Finance, 3rd ed. 2009). He is co-author of the well-known Gabler Bank Lexikon and the Studienwerk of Frankfurt School in Germany. Prof Loechel is a member of different professional and academic bodies in China as well as in Germany. He is also an experienced academic adminstrator, and has held positions of Acting and Deputy Dean, MBA Director, and Director of the Institute of Professional Education.  

Professor of Management Practice Dr Elizabeth Weldon 

Professor Elizabeth Weldon joined CEIBS on August 1 as Professor of Management Practice. She is expected to be a vital contributor to the school’s Executive Education programme. 

Her impressive past experience includes serving on the faculties of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, IMD International, Indiana University, Kellogg Graduate School of Management of Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois.  

Prof Weldon graduated from California State University in 1976, and received a Master degree and Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Ohio State University. Her research focuses on Global Leadership, Effectiveness of Western Leadership Development Practices in Asia and Leadership Development in Chinese Companies.  Prof Weldon is the co-editor of Advances in Global Leadership, v. 4 (JAI press, 2006) and Management and Organizations in China (Macmillan, 2000). Her research has been published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, as well as other leading journals.  Her rich background includes 10 years spent designing and delivering custom development programmes for managers in Asia, Europe and North America. She is a member of the Academy of Management, American Psychological Association, Academy of International Business, and Society for Human Resource Management.  

Professor of Operations Management Dr Hong Chen 

Dr Hong Chen joined CEIBS’ Operations Management faculty in July, a position he will fill for one year while on sabbatical from the University of British Columbia (UBC). At UBC, Prof Chen is Alumni Professor in Supply Chain Management and Chair of the Division of Operations and Logistics at Sauder School of Business.  

Prof Chen received a Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. His research expertise focuses on modelling, optimization and empirical analysis of supply-chain management, economic and financial systems; queuing network theory; stochastic modelling and analysis of manufacturing and service operations; healthcare management policy, and best practices of supply chain management in China. He has published extensively in leading international operation management journals, and has authored numerous academic books.

Assistant Professor of Finance Dr Frank Yu

Assistant Professor of Finance Dr Frank Yu joined CEIBS on August 1, 2009. Dr. Yu was a faculty member at University of Minnesota  from  2005 to 2007. He  also spent two years, 2007 to 2009, as  a research analyst in International Active Equities of Barclays Global Investors. He was responsible for developing trading strategies for the Japan Equity funds with total assets over $30 billion. He received his Master degree in economics from Tulane University and his Ph.D. in finance from the University of Chicago.

Dr. Yu’s main research interests focus on empirical corporate finance and behavioral finance. His publications appear in Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Consumer Research, and Journal of Behavioral Decision Making.
