June 28, 2009. Shanghai campus -- More than 1,200 job openings for university graduates were announced by CEIBS alumni today during the school’s Alumni Forum. The announcement is part of an initiative to help the country’s university grads weather the economic slowdown.

The event was attended by CEIBS President Zhu Xiaoming and Vice President Zhang Weijiong who applauded the efforts of those who have helped and urged even more CEIBS alumni to offer assistance. President Zhu stressed the negative impact that the global economic crisis has had on job seekers.

Other speakers included Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Education Commission Mr. Wang Qi and CEIBS Professor of Economics and Finance Dr. Xu Xiaonian.

Today’s event is the culmination of the May 12 launch of a series of CEIBS events focused on alumni concerns about the fate of the country’s university graduates -- and identifying ways to contribute to the nation’s economic development during the economic slowdown. During the event, many alumni offered not only advice and help, but also gave concrete information about job openings.

As of June 28, more than 87 alumni enterprises had offered 1,202 job positions. Of that number, 62 were for Shanghai firms, while 812 were in locations such as Beijing, Hangzhou, Henan, Shenzhen, Guizhou, etc. CEIBS alumni department has made this information available to 32 universities and 32 higher technical and vocational education institutes, as well as to the Shanghai Education Commission.

Today, CEIBS Vice President and Co-Dean Zhang Weijiong urged CEIBS alumni to be socially responsibility members of the society and also seize a chance to transform the current crisis into opportunities. He called on them to attract and retain top talent and provide more training opportunities for university graduates.

Deputy Director-General of Shanghai Education Commission Mr. Wang Qi said today’s event was timely. He noted CEIBS’ reputation as an incubator of excellent business leader, and its alumni’s strong sense of social responsibility.  On behalf of the Shanghai Education Commission, he extended his sincere thanks to CEIBS alumni.

During his speech entitled “Changes to the Economic Structure and Employment” Prof Xu Xiaonian pointed out that employment is the biggest challenge for every nation’s development. He told the audience that the service industry is the best hope for driving future employment. With the growth of the economy, there will be an increasing need for services, he said. The industries with the most room for growth, he added, include: finance, telecom, transportation, logistics, health care and media. Blaming China’s lagging service industry on over-regulation and the levying of value-added tax, he called for the government to lessen regulation, break up the existing monopolistic system and encourage private enterprises to develop, promote the free movement of resources, and create investment and job opportunities in the sector.

After the forum Prof. Xu, along with Director of Shanghai Human Resource Service Institution Gu Jiadong, Director of People’s Daily Xie Weiqun, Bridge HR Vice President Yuan Weijiang, and General Manager of CIICHR Talent Assessment Centre Wang Xu, hosted a roundtable to probe the problems faced by, and offer advice to, job seeking university graduates.
