April 1, 2009. Shanghai campus. - Drummers who performed during the Opening Ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics left a deep impression on a global audience. They showed their skill in beating musical instruments that have rich historical and cultural meaning for the Chinese people -- the Fou drums. Today, CEIBS relived the exciting moments of the Opening Ceremony and China's rich cultural heritage when Mr. Cui Lijian (EMBA 2006) and Manager of Zhi Cheng Correspondence presented a gift -- the #0605 auction certificate for Olympics Fou drums -- to CEIBS President Prof. Zhu Xiaoming. Fou drum #0605 will be displayed on the Shanghai campus. Mr. Cui also donated another Fou drum to the CEIBS Beijing Representative Office.

President Zhu expressed his appreciation for the gifts: "The Fou drum, which has both historic and cultural value, was a significant symbol of the Olympic Games. It represents both the spirit of the Games and our national cultures. Mr. Cai's donation was not only an expression of his gratitude towards CEIBS, but is also an indication of our alumni's increasing awareness of social responsibility."

Mr. Cai explained some of his reasons behind making the donation: "President Zhu Xiaoming, Vice Presidents Rolf Cremer and Zhang Weijiong, and Prof Wu Jinglian -- together with many CEIBS alumni -- were Olympic torchbearers. Therefore, the Olympic spirit was already deeply rooted in CEIBS. When I studied at CEIBS, I was the monitor for EMBA 2006, Class 05. It is only fitting that I bid for the #0605 Fou drum and then donate it to my school."

Mr. Cui also donated another Fou drum to President Zhu Xiaoming's personal collection. However, President Zhu has indicated that he will give the item to the CEIBS Shenzhen Representative Office.

It is reported that there was fierce competition during the auctioning of the Fou drums. It is said that only 1500 of the 2008 Olympic Fou drums were up for public auction while the remaining 508 have been donated to the museums of central and local governments. In order to prevent duplication, the authorities have destroyed the models used to produce the Olympics Fou drums.
