March 1, 2008. Dalian. - More than 400 entrepreneurs and government representatives made up the audience during today’s CEIBS Executive Forum at the Shangri-La Hotel in Dalian, where CEIBS Professor of Accounting Ding Yuan explored the vagaries of China’s A-Share market. He also offered sound advice on asset management and investment within such an irrational framework.

Prof. Ding, whose research interest includes analyst forecasts, used in-depth analysis during his keynote speech entitled, “Predicting A-Share Growth From Behind the Irrational Spree”. Basing his arguments on financial data, he shared his views on the new "Great Leap Forward" that has occurred in the A-Share market in both the Shanghai and Shenzhen Stock Exchanges within the past two years. The phenomenon was especially noticeable in 2007 and there are many different opinions about the underlying causes.

Using a sample of three listed companies, Prof. Ding explained the roles and functions that financial analysis plays in rational investment. Then, he shared his tips on effective asset management and smart investing: place more emphasis on analyzing the fundamentals of the firm while making long-term investments; find more ways to obtain information about listed companies; conduct serious analyses; learn to be a responsible investor; do the work required to sharpen your skills in accounting and finance.

Prof. Ding’s speech no doubt resonated with his audience, made up of commercial and municipal representatives of a city which, according to Deputy Mayor Dai Yulin, has placed the financial industry at the top of its agenda. During his welcome address, Deputy Mayor Dai said that some of the key steps that the Municipal Government has taken in the field of finance in the past few years include providing assistance to the commercial sector in areas such as business credit, encouraging IPOs, and credit evaluation. Dalian now boasts 31 listed companies, with a lot more actively involved in preparing IPOs.

CEIBS has played a role in Dalian’s impressive development, a point highlighted by CEIBS Vice-President and Co-Dean Zhang Weijiong in his address. Prof. Zhang noted that CEIBS has fostered a great many of the city’s outstanding management talents, a move that was consistent with the high speed of Dalian’s economic development in recent years. He also used the opportunity to thank the Municipal Government of Dalian and other co-sponsors of the event -- China Shipping Container Lines (Dalian) Co., Ltd; Dalian Port (PDA) Company Limited; and Dalian Commodity Exchange -- for their strong support of the forum. Other forum supporters were: Dalian Regulatory Bureau, China Securities Regulatory Commission, Dalian Association of Enterprises with Foreign Investment, the Securities and Futures Association of Dalian, the Listed Companies Association of Dalian and CEIBS Alumni Association Dalian Chapter.

The forum was officially opened by Mr. Sui Jun, CEIBS EMBA 2005 alumnus and general manager of China Shipping Container Lines (Dalian) Co., Ltd. CEIBS Assistant President Ma Yusheng was also among the list of dignitaries in attendance.

The forum was well-received, with many participants expressing the hope that there will be similar CEIBS events in Dalian in the near future. CEIBS Executive Forums offer an opportunity for the only Asia-based business school that has achieved top-tier global rankings (Top 50) for its MBA, EMBA and Executive Education programmes to broaden its reach.
