April 18, 2007, SHANGHAI CAMPUS - The China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) announced today the establishment of the CEIBS-Lujiazui Group International Finance Centre. Formed on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of the opening of Pudong to foreign investment, the International Finance Centre was established in collaboration with the Shanghai Lujiazui Development (Group) Co.
The signing ceremony was attended by Shanghai Municipal People's Congress (SMPC) Standing Committee Member Du Jiahao, who is also Pudong New District Party Secretary, as well as SMPC Standing Committee Deputy Director Dr. Zhu Xiaoming and Pudong New District Warden Zhang Xuebing. The event also attracted officials from Shanghai Bureau of China Banking Regulatory Commission, Shanghai Bureau of China Securities Regulatory Commission, and Shanghai Bureau of China Insurance Regulatory Commission.
In launching the International Finance Centre, CEIBS seeks to establish an authoritative information platform dedicated to research that will facilitate the development of Shanghai as an international financial hub. The Centre will provide first-class research, consulting services and educational programs for government entities and financial organizations.
During the ceremony, CEIBS Vice President and Co-dean Zhang Weijiong said the International Finance Centre would enhance CEIBS' academic work in the area of finance as well as supporting the development of Shanghai into an international financial center. Based in the Lujiazui Finance& Trade Zone, the Centre will develop a range of courses to further educate Shanghai-based finance professionals and will provide a platform for the city's financial industry to use for workshops, forums and seminars.
Finance is a key are of focus for CEIBS. Resident financial experts include professors Wu Jinglian, Xu Xiaonian, Zhang Chun and Xu Dingbo. The school's focus on finance is also clear through the ABN AMRO Chair in Risk Management, China Centre for Financial Research, and the Wind Financial Lab. This June, CEIBS will hold its first annual China Bankers Forum. In addition, the school has hosted renowned financial industry experts as guest speakers including internationally renowned finance author and analyst Jim Rogers, Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings' Board Director and Chairman Emeritus Leo Me Iamed, Morgan Stanley Managing Director and Chief Economist Stephen Roach, and New York Stock Exchange CEO John Thain.
The opening of the International Finance Centre follows on the earlier establishment of CEIBS' Centre of Chinese Private Enterprises, Centre of Entrepreneurship, Centre for Organizational and People Excellence, Centre for Emerging Market Strategy, China Centre for Financial Research, and the Centre for Healthcare Policy & Management. In the future, CEIBS plans to establish additional research centers to help meet the demands of China's rapid economic development and of the business community. R&D and academic innovation are critical current areas of focus for CEIBS.
