July 26, 2006- Rt. Hon. the Lord Patten of Barnes, CH, Chancellor of the University of Oxford visited China Europe International Business School. Dr. Zhu Xiaoming, President of CEIBS and Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress delivered the welcome speech. During his speech, Lord Patten stated that the development of China would not bring any threat to the world. He disagreed with the idea of some right-wing republicans in the US that the rise of China and India would threaten the international community. In his view, China's economic transformation during the past 40 years had brought many benefits to the world.

Moreover, China and India have played very important roles in terms of global economic growth. The world will face a lot more unsolvable problems if India and China are kept out. In many difficult issues such as Doha negotiation and environmental protection, the US, EU and Asia, especially China and India should establish closer partnership to face the common challenges.

After the speech, Professor WANG Jianmao,  Associate Dean and Director of the Case Development Centre at CEIBS, had a dialogue with Lord Patten on topics including global economic affairs and international trading. Lord Patten expressed his own ideas about the global trading disputes and gave an analysis of the roles played by EU, the US and China in the globalization.
