November 2, 2012. Singapore – After four months of intense competition with 724 teams from 81 business schools around the world, a team of CEIBS MBA 2012 students took the first runner-up prize in the NUS Business School “Cerebration 2012” global MBA challenge. The Cerebration competition – the name is a combination of “cerebral” and “celebration” – is one of the world’s leading Master’s level business challenges. This year’s field included teams from the global top 30 business schools.
Competing on team IBTIDA were CEIBS MBA 2012 students Varun Chadha, Rahul Dwivedi and Talha Khan. With their executive summary of the case Cognizant Technology Solutions: Future of Work which revolved around how Cognizant could transition from a service delivery model to one where it designs IT solutions tailored to its clients’ business models, the CEIBS team was among the 42 teams who made it through round one. After advancing through to the semi-finals with their business plan on the Cognizant case, the CEIBS team was one of six teams flown to Singapore for the final rounds of the competition.
Their preparations for the final two rounds in Singapore included a visit to the local Cognizant office where they had a detailed discussion with Sriram Iyer, Associate Director and lead for APAC workforce planning at Cognizant. They also sought guidance and feedback from CEIBS Professors including Associate Professor of Management Lorna Doucet, Associate Professor of Strategy Weiru Chen, Professor of Management Practice and Director of the CEIBS Centre for Leadership and Responsibility (ECCLAR) Mike Thompson, Professor of Management David De Cremer, Professor of Organizational Behavior Henry Moon and Professor of Marketing Jeongwen Chiang.
“Our experiences at CEIBS helped us immensely during the case competition,” Talha Khan said. “For this competition the service we proposed was inspired by a case study that we worked on as part of our organizational behavior course.
“It was an amazing experience. We learned about the industry practices within the IT services sector. We also learned about the concept of Future of Work in general and its implications for companies. We also got exposure to the field of network analysis.”
“We are incredibly proud of the work done by the CEIBS students in this competition,” said CEIBS Associate Dean and MBA Programme Director Prof. Chen Shimin. ”Celebration 2012 demands excellence on many hard and soft skills that we emphasize in our programme. We congratulate them for their exemplary efforts in researching and presenting their case. And we thank them for their contribution to enhancing the CEIBS brand through this global case competition.”
The CEIBS team beat a team from Indian School of Business (ISB) in the semi-finals to advance to the final round, where they took the first runner-up prize, ahead of the team from the Asia Institute of Management. The team from London Business School EMBA took the top prize. As first runner-up the CEIBS team won SGD $6,000 and a trophy.
