New Urbanization, New Opportunities in China

China’s urbanization has entered an exciting new phase that is widely expected to be a major source of momentum for the country’s economic growth as new reforms unfold in 2014.

Urbanization brings new opportunities, but has so far failed to ignite the enthusiasm of the capital market. What are investors’ doubts and concerns, and how can these be addressed? What are the best ways to capitalize on potential investment opportunities? How should real estate developers rationally plan their developments under the new urbanization strategy? Will the service industry and agri-business sector live up to the expectation of being two of the major players in this new round of economic growth? As new urbanization pushes forward, can Mainland China regain the appeal it once had for Hong Kong and Macao in the 1980s?

As the leading international business school in China, CEIBS organizes a number of high-level international forums and roundtables each year, offering an open platform for industry leaders, senior government officials, and renowned academics to share their insights on hot issues facing China and the world and to offer a steady supply of knowledge and wisdom to enterprises.

To be held in Hong Kong, this forum offers an open platform for high-level business executives from Mainland China to exchange ideas with their HK counterparts on the strategic opportunities and challenges brought by new urbanization and to better seize investment opportunities in 2014 as new reforms unfold in China.

Panel Discussion
Exploration and Practices of New Urbanization

Three decades ago, 18 farmers in Xiaogang Village, Anhui Province, risked their lives to sign a secret agreement of contracting collectively-owned farmland, lighting the torch for China's rural reform. Three decades later, Xiaogang Village is once again under the spotlight for its transfer of rural land-use rights, much earlier than the Central Urbanization Work Conference identified the clarification and transfer of rural land rights as one of its six major tasks. Meanwhile, cities and towns in close proximity to developed cities in Eastern China can't wait to catch the "bullet train" of new urbanization, and the suburbs in Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province and Shanghai Municipalities have already made some pioneering efforts in this regard. However, urbanization has so far failed to ignite the enthusiasm of the capital market. What are investors' doubts and concerns, and how can these be addressed? What are the best ways to capitalize on potential investment opportunities? How should real estate developers rationally plan their developments under the new urbanization strategy? Will the service industry and agri-business sector live up to the expectation of being two of the major players in this new round of economic growth? As new urbanization pushes forward, can Mainland China regain the appeal it once had for Hong Kong and Macao in the 1980s?
