Harrington, Thomas R.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Business Administration, CEIBS;
Founder and CEO, Darwin Marketing

T.R. Harrington is Visiting Assistant Professor of Business Administration at CEIBS. His current research includes extensive interviews with foreign entrepreneurs in China, their choice of marketing channels and ideas to generate awareness, interest and consideration in their start-up businesses as well as lessons learned on the entrepreneurial journey for foreigners in China.

Mr. Harrington published his recommendations and observations on Entrepreneurial Marketing in Harvard Business Review China in November 2005, regarding the ‘Death’ of Traditional Direct Marketing in China and the necessity for a rapid, relevant response digital strategy which included cases on Wireless Value Added Services (WVAS) start-up Linktone (LKTN on Nasdaq) and local transportation card and Loyalty CRM card start-up, SmartClub.

Mr. Harrington has been at the forefront of interactive marketing and information technology since 1995 in Silicon Valley and since 2001 in China. Select client credits include work for leading Chinese brands China Mobile, Tencent and Alibaba in addition to his work for leading global brands such as Apple, Nokia, Chanel, L’Oreal, P&G, Dell, Citibank, and eBay just to name a few.

During the mid to late nineties, prior to founding Darwin Marketing, a Shanghai based digital Search, Social and Ecommerce marketing company, Mr. Harrington held a number of marketing management positions at USWeb/CKS, RedGorilla.com and Bank of America.

His expertise has been sought by or featured in Harvard Business Review (China), Fortune Magazine, Reuters, Associated Press, Search Engine Strategies, AdTech and numerous private equity / hedge funds. He holds an MBA from the Darden School at University of Virginia, the exchange programme at CEIBS and a BA from Boston College.
