CEIBS Forms Research Unit with ICDP

The International Car Distribution Programme (ICDP) has established an operation in China as a research unit within the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai.

ICDP researches and provides strategic advice specialising in the automotive sector.  The programme was founded in 1994 in Europe, and has teams operating in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Australia. In addition ICDP has a collaboration agreement with the Centre for Automotive Research in the USA.

ICDP China will be headed by CEIBS Professor of Operations Management Tom Callarman. The programme's China research projects will be undertaken by Chinese graduates from CEIBS.

"This is an exciting development for CEIBS and ICDP. The programme's extensive research methodology and understanding of the automotive industry developed over many years in Europe and Australia will be used in the rapidly growing Chinese automotive market," said Prof. Callarman. He added that research findings from China will used to assist ICDP members in Europe and Australia to understand the complexities of the greater China market.

Centre for Global Operations Management and Value Chain Integration

CEIBS has recently established the Centre for Global Operations Management and Value Chain Integration to generate and disseminate knowledge on the development and management of value chains. The Centre will serve as a forum for knowledge dissemination through publications and public training courses and workshops offered within the CEIBS MBA, EMBA and Executive Education programmes.

The CEIBS Centre for Global Operations Management and Value Chain Integration will serve as the umbrella organization for three sub-parts focused on: (1) Logistics and Supply Chain Management, (2) Operations Management, and (3) Supply Management. The Centre will integrate these three sub-parts and will focus on collaboration and risk management.

Collaboration includes the development and application of collaborative models which focus on redesign of organization structures and technology infrastructures to support value network integration. This also includes coordinating business and financial models across the value network rather than focusing on individual organizations.

Risk management is becoming an increasingly important aspect of value chain integration, covering such issues as the development and application of risk mitigation models to buffer against interruptions in the flow of materials caused by natural or man-made disasters such as inventory shortages, dock strikes, typhoons, or earthquakes.

Included in the Centre structure will be partnerships with the International Car Distribution Programme (ICDP). Currently, the ICDP has operations in Europe, Australia and China. Another partnership in development is with the Global Manufacturing Research Group, which has developed extensive questionnaires to assess the current capabilities and needs of value networks and firms. These questionnaires have provided valuable insight into value chain issues worldwide for the past 10 years, but their application in China has been limited.
