The event was part of the slate of activities in which Prof. Prodi will participate during his professorship at CEIBS this year.

CEIBS Lujiazui International Finance Research Centre, Shanghai. -- Former EU Commission President and two-time Italian Prime Minister His Excellency Romano Prodi delivered an address on "The Role of the European Union and China and the World's Financial Architecture of 21st Century." Speaking to an audience of 50 finance executives, government officials, as well as CEIBS alumni and students members of the Finance Club, Mr Prodi, who will be spending a one-year professorship at CEIBS this year, provided frank comments on a wide range of current issues now facing the global finance industry. The event was organized by the CEIBS Lujiazui International Finance Research Centre (LCFC) and the German Centre of Banking and Finance.

Thomas Leysen, Chairman of the Federation of Belgium Industries in Belgium and Chairman of Umicore, addressed the topic of "Crises and Renewal: Economic Crises and Recovery" at the CEIBS Shanghai Campus this evening. Jointly hosted by CEIBS and the Benelux Chamber of Commerce in China (BENCHAM), the event was part of CEIBS' EU-China BMT Project Lecture Series. The BMT Project, which runs from 2008 to 2012, will raise awareness of the European Union in China and knowledge about the European Union as a political and economic entity.

March 25, 2009. Shanghai campus -- Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Ivailo Kalfin and a 12-member delegation paid an official visit to CEIBS' Shanghai campus today, to participate in a roundtable discussion on "China and the European Union in the 21st Century". The visit was also an opportunity for Deputy Prime Minister Kalfin to officially announce that CEIBS Honorary President Professor Liu Ji has been appointed as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Bulgarian Diplomatic Institute.
Feb 27, 2008 EU lecture in Hefei
On 27th February 2009, David Gosset, director of ECCIR ( the Euro-China Center for International and Business Relations) at CEIBS, gave a lecture in Hefei, Anhui province, to the participants of the EU-China Business Development Certificate Programme, a component of the CEIBS BMT project. Gosset developed his views on the relationship between the EU and China in the 21st century. He put the relationship in a global perspective and analyzed the specific significance of the Eurasian link. A Q&A session followed the presentation where the nature of the EU was discussed but also the current difficulties and challenges between Beijing and Paris and their impact on the overall relationship between China and the European Union. Gosset concluded his remarks by a call for more cooperation in a time of global financial and economic challenges.

The financial crisis now sweeping across key markets worldwide made up a central focus of the discussions during CEIBS' first annual "Europe Day". The event attracted 200 members of the diplomatic community, executives, academics, students and journalists for a day-long forum on the EU-China relationship. Throughout the day, six expert speakers from government, academia or business spoke on the root causes of the ongoing financial turbulence and offered advice on the way forward.
