The 5th Annual China Bankers Forum 2011

Background

The deepening of financial crisis across the globe in 2011 has placed the world economy in a difficult situation, as evidenced by the slowdown of economic recovery, vulnerability of financial system, and higher inflation and worsening asset bubbles in emerging economies. Bailout measures are now being reexamined among the most affected countries for the purpose of a coordinated international response to regional and global financial regulation, which, though hard to achieve, is indisputably an institutional requirement to go with the tide of economic globalization in the 21st century.

The banking industry, being the first and hardest hit sector in the world economic crisis, has to rise to new challenges while struggling to pull through hard times. China is facing a difficult choice between universal and specialized banking system. It also has to improve the governance and risk control and enhance business innovations in its banking industry so as to take advantage of unprecedented opportunities that may arise in global competition in the post-crisis era. Up to now, the prevalence of indirect financing with banks as intermediaries in China has generated strong linkages of the banking sector with many other sectors of economy.

How can we restructure the economic and financial systems in such a volatile economic situation full of uncertainties? Is it possible that we bring the world back on track from a new perspective across domains of economy, banking and finance? The forum, by providing a powerful East-West dialogue, will probe into the key topics from the perspectives of government policy-makers, industry leaders and renowned academic scholars.
